Industrial Mechanic / Fitter (day shift)

Weir Canada, Inc. supplies industry and the Federal Government with a wide range of industrial and engineering services.  Its Weir Marine Engineering division, which operates the Naval Engineering Test Establishment on behalf of the Government of Canada, currently has a challenging opportunity for a Industrial Mechanic / Fitter in Montreal (LaSalle), Quebec.

This is a unionized position and working conditions are in accordance with the Union Agreement currently in place.

Major duties and responsibilities:

  • Reporting to the Shop Supervisor, the Fitter is competent to work directly from drawings and written instructions to carry out any operation in his trade with minimal supervision;
  • Assemble test rigs, and install and operate equipment under test.  This may include pumps, diesel engines, gas turbine engines, hydraulic systems, fluid handling equipment,  as well as other types of mechanical equipment;
  • Carry out mechanical maintenance on equipment, systems and building infrastructure as required; and
  • May occasionally involve travel to support testing at other locations, including onboard ships.

Education and Experience Requirements (minimum):

  • Successful completion of a Diplôme d’études professionnelles (DEP) (Vocational High School Diploma) and five years recent experience working in a mechanical environment; or
  • Certification as Marine Engineering Mechanic with the Canadian Forces and five years recent experience; or
  • Qualified as a Maritime Engineering Technician (QL5 MAR ENG TECH) with the Canadian Forces and five years recent experience; or
  • Completion of an equivalent formal or on-the-job training program and five years recent experience.

Senior Systems Specialist

Weir Marine Engineering, which operates the Naval Engineering Test Establishment on behalf of the Government of Canada, currently has a challenging opportunity for an experienced (10+ Years) Senior Systems Specialist in Montreal (LaSalle), Quebec, with primary focus on enterprise server systems and technologies in a lab environment. 

This position is not a direct operations support role and does not involve being on call.  This position will appeal to someone who enjoys a combination of technical challenges within projects of varying scope and complexity, hands-on technical work, hands-off investigations, and no two days that are exactly the same.  The ideal candidate has a background or similar past experience in conducting technical evaluations and investigations as part of internal or external IT projects, including experience in preparing technical reports, in English, for project sponsors and stakeholders.

Position Description:

  1. Performing lab tests, evaluations and impact assessments of changes to current system and network configurations;
  2. Design, setup and testing of new IT systems, technologies or capabilities;
  3. Developing detailed and methodical test plans and scenarios to support tests and evaluations;
  4. Preparing detailed and comprehensive test reports summarizing test and evaluation results and findings;
  5. Preparing detailed build, installation and/or configuration procedures and overseeing implementations;
  6. Reviewing technical documentation to provide independent opinions and impact assessment;
  7. Technical support, primarily with respect to the technologies mentioned in the QUALIFICATIONS section above;
  8. Maintaining and supporting lab systems and test environments; and
  9. Monitoring of hardware/software baselines and configurations.

Occasional travel will be required.

Skills Needed:

  • TCP/IP and related protocols, OSI model, and networking principles of Ethernet LANs/ WANs and VPNs;
  • Microsoft Windows 2003/2008 Server;
  • Virtualization platforms, including VMware ESX, ESXi and/or vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V;
  • Microsoft Active Directory 2003/2008, AD-integrated DNS and Group Policy Objects;
  • Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7;
  • Enterprise server hardware and equipment, including blade systems, NAS/SAN, tape backup systems, FC/iSCSI storage and UPS systems;
  • Microsoft Exchange 2003/2007 Server (optional); and
  • Microsoft WSUS 3.0 and SMS/SCCM (optional).

Senior Network Engineer/Specialist

This position will appeal to someone who enjoys a combination of technical challenges, lab investigations, documentation of tests and configurations, and occasional field trials.  The ideal candidate has a background or similar past experience in conducting technical evaluations and investigations as part of internal or external network projects, including experience in preparing technical reports in English.

Position Description:

  • Developing detailed and methodical test plans and scenarios;
  • Conducting tests and technical evaluations;
  • Investigation and assessment of technical impacts of proposed changes to complex networks;
  • Coordination of the deployment of tested/approved configurations on client production networks, and verification of in-service configurations;
  • Preparation of technical documentation, including test reports, investigation reports and configuration/installation procedures; and
  • Technical support to other team members in areas such as switching/routing, LAN and WAN connectivity, quality of service, DNS, IP telephony, web caching, etc.

Occasional travel will be required.

Skills Needed:

  • Expertise and experience (5+ years) with routing topologies, namely OSPF, EIGRP and BGP in complex (mainly Cisco) environments;
  • Expertise and experience (5+ years) with design, integration and configuration of WAN and LAN infrastructures;
  • Expertise and experience (5+ years) with Cisco IOS in both routers and switches;
  • Expertise and experience (5+ years) with Layer 2 switching, including expertise in VLANs, STP, 802.1X;
  • Expertise and experience (5+ years) with TCP/IP and related technologies (e.g. DNS, DHCP, SNMP, SMTP, HTTP, FTP, etc.);
  • Experience in designing lab tests to evaluate the integration of new hardware, IOS or configurations into existing networks;
  • Experience with data capture and analysis; and
  • Familiar with Windows XP, Windows 2000/2003/2008 Server/Active Directory, Exchange 2000/2003 and Linux.

Qualifications Required:

  • Eligibility for Canadian Government Security Clearance is compulsory - requires Canadian citizenship, in addition to having resided in Canada for the past 10 years;

Junior Systems Specialist

The primary role of this position is to support and maintain an information systems lab environment and provide assistance to other team members who make use of the lab systems for Test & Evaluation (T&E) purposes. 

Position Description:

  • Daily health monitoring and verifications of lab systems in general;
  • Performing back-ups and preparing images of system configurations;
  • Providing assistance to more senior systems/network specialists, as required;
  • Hardware repairs and warranty repair coordination;
  • Preventative maintenance of IT equipment;
  • Physical equipment staging and wiring;
  • IT asset management, inventory management and audits;
  • Maintaining physical and logical diagrams of lab systems and test environments; and
  • Responsible for the lab environmental systems (power, cooling, etc).

Skills Needed:

  • Basic knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems;
  • Basic knowledge of system backup technologies;
  • Basic knowledge of IT equipment and hardware from a maintenance perspective;
  • Basic knowledge of IT networking principles;
  • Knowledge of structured cabling technologies; and
  • Basic knowledge of UPS systems.

Qualifications Required:

Position Description:

  • Integration, configuration, set-to-work and post-installation testing of new and upgraded network infrastructure and systems;
  • Investigation and resolution of escalated problems with in-service systems, including issues with switching/routing, LAN and WAN connectivity, DNS, quality of service, IP telephony, Exchange, Active Directory, Group Policies, applications, etc. (including being on call on a rotation basis to respond to the occasional escalated trouble call);

Systems/Directory Services Specialist

Weir Marine Engineering, which operates the Naval Engineering Test Establishment on behalf of the Government of Canada, currently has a challenging opportunity in Ottawa, Ontario for an experienced (7+ Years) System Specialist with significant experience with Directory Services projects.  The current requirement is for a six-month contract to support the analysis, planning and testing phase of a Directory Services rationalization project.  There is a possibility that the contract could subsequently be extended/renewed. 

This position will appeal to someone who enjoys a combination of investigations, test planning, hands-on technical testing, documentation and reporting. 

Position Description:

The Systems/Directory Services Specialist will be a member of the Testing & Validation Team within the Information and Communication Systems Section, and will report to the Testing & Validation Team Leader.  Responsibilities for this position include:

  • Familiarization with the existing Directory Services configurations being employed on specific DND domains;
  • Performing detailed analysis of the Directory Services requirements and providing a report;
  • Performing detailed analysis of the current Directory Services configurations and evaluating against the requirements in order to identify gaps and potential vulnerabilities;
  • Identifying and evaluating options to rationalize and improve the Directory Services, including performing impact analysis;
  • Preparing test plans, configuring test environments and conducting testing to further assess the possible solution(s); and
  • Documenting the recommended solution and providing an implementation roadmap

Travel outside the National Capital Region is not expected. 

Skills Needed:

  • Theoretical and technical understanding of various Directory Services architectures and products, including X.500, LDAP and Active Directory;
  • Experience with the planning and implementation of Directory Services projects, including evaluation of products and configurations, and hands-on testing and proof-of-concept in lab environments;
  • Experience with Windows 2003 with Active Directory in large scale environments;
  • Familiarity with PKI and Entrust;
  • Experience with relational databases, including Oracle;
  • Familiarity with Critical Path’s InJoin Directory Server would be highly desirable; and
  • Experience with DND networks would be desirable.

Qualifications Required:

  • Canadian citizenship is necessary as part of the requirements to obtain a government security clearance at the requisite level;
  • An existing Government of Canada Secret security clearance would be desirable;
  • Proficiency in English technical writing and communication, with experience in preparing technical reports in English;
